from Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard

Thomas Gray (1716-1771)

Full many a gem of purest ray serene
The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

taken from Immortal Poems of the English Language (Oscar Williams)

this stanza is one of 32 that comprise the poem. to me it corresponds with a line from the Alec Baldwin/Meg Ryan movie Prelude to a Kiss: "never to be squandered, the miracle of another human being."
That might not be exactly right, it's been a long time since I watched the flick.
